About the Study

Welcome to the VIEW study! VIEW stands for Viruses & Infections in Essential Workers.

The VIEW project is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and is run by the Health Policy Center at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The goal of this project is to track COVID and virus transmission in our non-healthcare essential worker community. Our team recognizes the sacrifice that many of the people in our community made and continue to make to keep our cities running. The findings of this study can be used to create better recommendations to help keep workers and their families safe.

When you join, you will be asked to answer a series of questions to enroll in VIEW. After enrolling, you will have study materials sent to your home to return weekly at no cost to you. You will also complete a very brief online weekly survey. You will receive compensation for your time. Click here for more details.

The VIEW study is collaborating with area community organizations, employers, faith communities, and local media to help spread the word about the value of joining the study and helping all of us learn more about COVID and virus transmissions. If you would like someone to come speak to your group to share more information, please reach out to us at viewstudy@vumc.org

Who can join?

Adults aged 18 or older who work in non-healthcare, essential worker roles can join the study. You must work outside of the home for at least 20 or more hours a week and live in Tennessee within 100 miles of Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Everyone who joins the study will receive compensation. Our team is specifically hoping to connect with people employed in several critical areas including:

  • Transportation,
  • Manufacturing,
  • Education/Child Care,
  • Hospitality,
  • Service Industry,
  • Construction,
  • And more!

If you live with others who work outside of the home 20+ hours a week they might also be able to join the VIEW study.

What will I be asked to do?

To join the study, you will be asked to answer a series of questions over the phone and in an online survey to help the study team understand more about who is joining the study. Once done, you will be sent a kit in the mail. You will do one self-swab and collect a small, optional blood sample by doing a finger prick with the items we send. Once returned you will receive $60 for your time.

You will then be asked to complete brief weekly tasks (online survey and self-swab) that you can do from the comfort of your own home at no cost to you. We think these tasks should take no more than 15 minutes of your time each week and you will receive up to $80 a month for your time.

At 3-months, you will be asked to complete a survey online or on the phone. You will receive $50 for your time.

At 6-months, you will be asked to complete a survey online or on the phone and mail in an optional blood sample. You will receive $150 for your time.

You can opt-out of the study at any time but can participate for up to three years.
